Ancient Tamil Poetry
Tamil literature is one of the most ancient literatures in the world. Tamil language is originated from Dravidian language. Dravidian speakers form most of the population of South India, and there are about 245 million native speakers of languages derived from Dravidian language nowadays in several countries (India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives).

Kuruntokai (the short collection) is a classical Tamil poetic collection from Sangam literature, one of the Eight Anthologies. The poems are credited to 205 ancient poets, belonging to the akam category. Sangam literature is classified into akam (inner), about romantic love and eroticism, and puram (outer), about heroic deeds and public life. The Sangam Age spans from c. 6th century BCE to c. 3rd century CE, and it was named after the academies of poets and scholars centered in the city of Madurai (Tamil Nadu, India).
